The Aztecs, also known as the Mexica, were a Mesoamerican civilization that flourished from the 14th to the 16th century. They were known for their advanced culture and empire-building strategies.
One of the most distinctive features of the Aztec civilization was their system of government and social structure. At the top of the hierarchy was the emperor, who held absolute power and was considered a living representative of the gods. Below the emperor were noble families, who held significant political and administrative roles. The common people were divided into different social classes based on their professions, with farmers and workers comprising the majority.
The Aztecs had a complex religious system centered around a pantheon of gods, with their most important deity being Huitzilopochtli, the god of sun and war. They believed in human sacrifice to appease the gods and maintain the cosmic balance. This involved capturing prisoners in warfare and offering them as sacrifices to the gods.
The Aztecs were also known for their advanced agricultural practices, especially the cultivation of maize (corn). They built elaborate floating gardens called chinampas to grow crops, which helped sustain their large population. Additionally, they had a sophisticated trade system and extensive markets where goods such as textiles, pottery, and precious stones were traded.
In the 15th century, the Aztec Empire reached its peak, stretching across much of present-day central and southern Mexico. However, it eventually faced a downfall when Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés arrived in 1519. The Aztecs initially welcomed Cortés, but tensions soon escalated, leading to a violent conflict known as the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. The Aztecs were eventually defeated in 1521, marking the end of their civilization.
